This Week at JLC Construction Services: Precast Channel Pouring in Bellingham
This past week, I had the opportunity to work with Old Castle Infrastructure in Bellingham, Washington, pouring precast manhole channels for several of their contractor clients. It was a busy three-day run, and I handled the entire scope of work solo.
Over three days, I poured 25 manholes—nine on the first day, and eight each on the next two. The work required about 12.5 yards of concrete, with most of the pouring done outdoors. On day three, when the weather turned, I quickly adapted and moved operations indoors to keep production on track.
Unlike many production operations that use forming systems like True Contour or pre-cut PVC sections, I use a hand-forming process. Each channel is custom-shaped based on how the manhole is cored and the orientation of the pipe as it enters and exits. It's more labor-intensive, but the result is a smoother and more efficient flow path, along with a higher standard of quality.
Every job is a chance to raise the bar. I appreciate Old Castle and their trust in my craftsmanship—and the contractors who rely on this work to keep their systems flowing.
